Former Site of Buyun Mountain Training Ground

Yunshan was a famous training ground for the Red Army during the struggle in Jinggangshan and also where the local armed forces of Yuan Wencai’s Peasant Self-Defense Army conducted their early drills.

Yuan Wencai’s forces had taken part in the Great Revolution and were staunchly against the local despotic gentry. However, lacking leadership from the Communist Party, they had no clear revolutionary objectives and retained strong bandit tendencies. After Comrade Mao Zedong led his troops to Ninggang, the strategy of uniting with and winning over Yuan Wencai and Wang Zuo’s forces was established at the Ancient City Meeting. Mao also met Yuan Wencai in Dacang Village, Ninggang, and gave him over a hundred rifles. In mid-October, comrades such as You Xuechen, Chen Bojun, and Xu Yanggan were dispatched from the Workers’ and Peasants’ Revolutionary Army to serve as company commanders, deputy company commanders, and political instructors within Yuan’s unit. They provided political education and military training to the troops on Buyun Mountain.

During the training period, there were three drills and two lectures each day, covering both political and military studies. Mao Zedong took great interest in the training at Buyun Mountain and personally went there to give lectures and guide the drills. Through political education, class consciousness education, and military training, the troops quickly transformed. A soldiers' committee was established, implementing democratic practices within the army and fostering entirely new officer-soldier relationships. To ensure the Party’s leadership over this local armed force, Party organizations were set up within the troops, and a number of loyal and courageous poor workers and peasants were recruited into the Party. In early February 1928, the Front Committee promoted Yuan Wencai’s and Wang Zuo’s local forces on Mount Jinggang to the 2nd Regiment of the 1st Brigade of the 1st Army of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Revolutionary Army at the Zhu Family Ancestral Hall in Dalong. Yuan Wencai was appointed regimental commander and Wang Zuo deputy commander, forming a people’s army under the leadership of the Party.
