Former Residence of Comrade Mao Zedong in Huang’ao

The Former Residence of Comrade Mao Zedong in Huang’ao is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangxi Province.

The Former Residence of Comrade Mao Zedong in Huang’ao is located in Huang’ao Village, Huang’ao Township, about 17 kilometers south of Ciping. Originally a temple called "Dìmǔ Gōng" (Earth Mother Temple), the residence faces south and is a 410-square-meter earthen house built with wood and clay. Mao Zedong often stayed in the left room on the loft of this building when passing through Huang’ao.

In February 1928, Comrade Mao Zedong led soldiers of the Workers' and Peasants' Revolutionary Army to Huang’ao, where he engaged with the masses to carry out land reform and establish a revolutionary government. During this period, Mao attended the founding meeting of the Huang’ao District Workers', Peasants', and Soldiers' Government. At the meeting, he used an easy-to-understand metaphor: “Fighting the local tyrants is like cutting down a big tree. Once the tree is down, you have firewood. Once the tyrants are overthrown, the poor will have food to eat and clothes to wear.” He called on the masses to organize themselves, take up arms, and launch guerrilla attacks to fight the tyrants and raise funds.

In early 1928, the Suichuan County Workers', Peasants', and Soldiers' Government, the Suichuan County Committee of the Communist Party of China, and the County Red Guards also moved their offices here from the county seat.

In May 1928, Zhu De and Chen Yi led a part of the Fourth Red Army to defeat an enemy battalion in Huang’ao. On September 12 of the same year, Mao Zedong, Zhu De, and Chen Yi presided over a meeting of company-level and above officers of the Red Army at the central hall of the loft to discuss and plan the operation to attack the forces of the Kuomintang's Liu Shiyi. On the 13th, the Red Army defeated five battalions of enemy troops in Suichuan and occupied the county seat. The building still retains slogans written by the Red Army at that time, such as: “Lenin is the creator of the Communist Party, Down with the reactionary Kuomintang!”

In September 1988, the People’s Government of Jinggangshan City designated the “Former Residence of Comrade Mao Zedong in Huang’ao” as a municipal cultural relic protection unit.
