Site of the Double-Horse Stone Red Army Outpost Fortifications

The Site of the Double-Horse Stone Red Army Outpost Fortifications is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangxi Province.

The Double-Horse Stone Outpost is located to the southwest of Ciping in Jinggangshan, and is one of the five major outposts of the Jinggangshan military base area. From here, heading west through Jingzhu Mountain, you can reach Dayuan and other areas in Yanling County, Hunan. It was an important checkpoint where the Red Army once held back enemy forces from Hunan attempting to invade the Jinggangshan Revolutionary Base Area. This place was originally called "Xiajing'ao", but because there were two large rocks stacked beside the stone stairway that resembled horse heads from a distance, it was also called "Double-Horse Stone".

In October 1927, Mao Zedong led the troops of the Autumn Harvest Uprising through difficult battles and arrived at Jingzhu Village on the 23rd. The next day, Mao and his troops, guided by Zhu Chiliu, a representative of Wang Zuo, ascended Jinggangshan via Double-Horse Stone and stationed in Dajing Village.

Starting in May 1928, the Fourth Red Army established an outpost here, constructing three main fortifications, several lines of defense, and a sentry shed. Usually, about one platoon of troops, together with rebel fighters, guarded the site to prevent enemy incursions.

In January 1929, during the Third Counter-"Encirclement and Suppression" Campaign by the Jinggangshan military and civilians, Huang Long, commander of the 12th Battalion of the Fifth Red Army, led his troops in holding this outpost. At the end of the month, after the fall of Jinggangshan, Peng Dehuai ordered the Red Army soldiers defending here to move to Ciping to regroup, then break through enemy lines via Hexilong at the western foot of Jinggangshan’s main peak, heading toward Dafen in Suichuan County, and eventually rendezvous with the main force of the Fourth Red Army in Ruijin, thus preserving the revolutionary fighting force.

In September 1988, the People's Government of Jinggangshan City designated the Double-Horse Stone Outpost as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit.
