The former site of the upgraded enlistment of Yuan Wencai and Wang Zuo's troops is located in Jinggangshan City. In March 2018, it was announced as part of the sixth batch of provincial-level cultural heritage protection units in Jiangxi Province.
After more than three months of political education and military training at Buyun Mountain and Dajing, the political consciousness, organizational discipline, and military quality of the two local armed forces—Yuan Wencai’s and Wang Zuo’s troops—had improved markedly. Consequently, the Front Committee of the Chinese Communist Party decided to upgrade these two local forces into the Second Regiment of the First Division of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Revolutionary Army.
In early February 1928, a general meeting was held at the Zhu Family Ancestral Hall in Dalong. Zhang Ziqing, representing the Front Committee, announced the decision: Yuan Wencai was appointed as commander of the Second Regiment, Wang Zuo as deputy commander, and He Changgong as the regimental Party representative. More than twenty cadres were also transferred from the First Regiment to serve as Party representatives at various levels within the Second Regiment. This move strengthened Party leadership and political ideological work within the troops.
The Second Regiment was divided into two battalions (Yuan’s troops formed the First Battalion, and Wang’s the Second Battalion). When the Fourth Red Army was established on May 4, 1928, this regiment was incorporated as the 32nd Regiment of the Fourth Red Army, becoming one of its main forces.
The successful reorganization of Yuan and Wang’s forces played an important role in establishing the Jinggangshan Revolutionary Base. Under the leadership of Comrade Mao Zedong, officers and soldiers of the 32nd Regiment fought bravely and made indelible historical contributions to consolidating and developing the Jinggangshan Revolutionary Base.
Wang Zuo (1898–1930), also known as Yunhui, was born in 1898 in Suichuan County, Jiangxi Province. In his early years, he gathered a group of men in Jinggangshan and fought against local despots and gentry. In early 1927, with the support of the Suichuan Peasant Association, his force was reorganized into a Peasant Self-Defense Corps. In July of that year, he assisted Yuan Wencai’s troops in capturing Yongxin County, rescuing imprisoned Communists and revolutionary masses. In October, he welcomed Mao Zedong’s troops from the Autumn Harvest Uprising to Jinggangshan, and his unit accepted reorganization. In February 1928, he was appointed deputy commander of the 2nd Regiment of the 1st Division of the 1st Army of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Revolutionary Army.

Yuan Wencai, also known as Xuansan, was born in October 1898 in Mayuan Pit, Maoping, Ninggang County, Jiangxi Province. In 1924, dissatisfied with the oppression of landlords and gentry, he joined the bandit group “Machete Squad.” In September 1926, he accepted the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party and led his troops in Ninggang. He helped establish the People’s Committee of Ninggang County and served as commander of the Ninggang County Peasant Self-Defense Army. By the end of November that year, the Ninggang County Party Branch was established, and Yuan Wencai was recruited as a member of the Chinese Communist Party. In July 1927, Yuan Wencai led the County Peasant Self-Defense Army along with peasant forces from Anfu, Suichuan, and Lianhua, and together with troops from Yongxin, they captured Yongxin...
