Cai Xiang Ancestral Hall

Cai Zhonghui Ancestral Hall (Cai Xiang Ancestral Hall) is located on the south side of South Luoyang Bridge Street. It was built to commemorate the achievements of Cai Xiang. Since its establishment in the Northern Song Dynasty, the ancestral hall has been renovated in successive dynasties. The existing Cai Zhonghui Ancestral Hall is a Qing Dynasty structure, facing south with a north orientation, featuring three bays and three courtyards. The first section is the main gate, atop which hangs a plaque inscribed with “Ancestral Hall of Cai Zhonghui, Prefect of the Song Dynasty.” On the stone pillars of the porch, there is a couplet inscribed by Huang Yiji, the top scholar and son of Huang Zonghan, a late Qing Dynasty official and Viceroy of Liangguang. The couplet reads: “Building the bridge, the heavens and earth grow old; leaving the calligraphy, even spirits and gods are amazed.”

In the central hall, there was originally a statue of Lord Cai Zhonghui, with his right hand raised holding a brush and paper spread out on the desk, depicting the posture of writing with a flourish. The figure is rendered with an unrestrained yet dignified elegance, capturing the demeanor of a renowned scholar and distinguished official. In front of it stand two famous steles of the “Record of the Wan’an Bridge” (one of which is a replica). The article, calligraphy, and carving are acclaimed as the “Three Perfections,” displayed on either side. Other stone inscriptions are arranged in sequence along both sides of the corridor. In total, the Cai Zhonghui Ancestral Hall houses as many as 11 large and small stone steles.
