Zhongzheng Park

Spanning a vast area of 50 hectares, Zhongzheng Park includes a 36-hectare Taihu Lake and 14 hectares of sandy dunes and green fields. At the park’s entrance stands a grand and imposing front gate, with a bronze statue of the late President Chiang Kai-shek on the left. He is dressed in a Sun Yat-sen suit, holding a cane in his left hand and waving a military cap in his right, radiating a kind smile.

The Taihu Recreation Area centers around Taihu Lake, which also encompasses the historically significant August 23rd War History Museum. Taihu Lake is the largest man-made freshwater lake in Kinmen, completed in 1967 (the 56th year of the Republic of China). The lake features three islands, each with pavilions that create a serene and scenic atmosphere. The park also contains an ancient house called “Weilu,” a Ming Dynasty structure excavated from the sand and subsequently restored, making it a unique attraction.

In 1986 (the 75th year of the Republic of China), on the centennial of President Chiang’s birth, soldiers and civilians collaborated to reclaim land and establish a forested park in front of Yourong Garden. They designed a commemorative park featuring water, trees, lotus ponds, and a winding long bridge, known as Zhongzheng Memorial Forest.

Chiang Kai-shek (October 31, 1887 – April 5, 1975), whose given name was Zhongzheng and courtesy name Jieshi, was also known by his childhood name Ruiyuan, registry name ZhouTai, and school name Zhiqing. Originally from Yixing, Jiangsu Province, he was born in Fenghua, Zhejiang. He was a prominent political figure and military leader in modern China, having served as President of the Whampoa Military Academy, Commander-in-Chief of the National Revolutionary Army, Chairman of the National Government, President of the Executive Yuan, Chairman of the Military Affairs Commission of the National Government, Generalissimo of the Republic of China, Leader of the Kuomintang, Director of the Three People's Principles Youth League, Supreme Commander of the China Theater of the Allied Forces during World War II, and President of the Republic of China, among other roles.
