Penghu Hundred Zhang Rock is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.

Penghu Hundred Zhang Rock is located at the southern end of the Bai'e Mountain Range within Penghu Town, Yongchun County. The peak is called Ma De Mountain, and the temple atop it is commonly known as Ma’s Temple or Mazhi Temple. Because it stands as a solitary peak and features huge colorful rocks in front of the temple that resemble candles reaching toward the sky, it is also called Hundred Zhang Rock. It is said to be the place where the Immortal Maiden Ma cultivated herself and attained nirvana. The temple was first built during the Song Dynasty and primarily enshrines the Maiden Ma, commonly known as Ma’s Immortal Mother.

Hundred Zhang Rock boasts a unique geographical location and precipitous mountain terrain. Ascending to its heights offers sweeping views akin to ascending into the heavens. Gazing into the distance, one sees wisps of village smoke, the meandering Taixi Stream, creating a scene both refreshing and uplifting. It has long been praised as the “Little Mount Tai.” Major attractions in the scenic area include Hundred Zhang Terraces, Millennium Ancient Cypresses, Cifeng Yuxiu (Beautiful Scenery of Cifeng Peak), Xiangtian Zhu (Candles Reaching the Sky), Tao0, Princess Hall, Middle Hall, Front Hall, Viewing Platform Pavilions, and a Wax Museum. Throughout the ages, numerous visitors and devotees have traveled from afar to Hundred Zhang Rock—to admire the views and compose poetry, to offer incense and pray to the Immortal Mother, or to seek dreams and blessings for career success and health. Many folk tales circulate about dream wishes that came true. Every year during the Mid-Autumn Festival, the site sees a peak in pilgrimages, drawing crowds of domestic and international tourists. Many visitors offer incense, pray for dreams, and even sleep on the ground, hoping for auspicious dreams. Others stay up all night, admiring the moon, chatting, and enjoying the night scenery of Peach Blossom Land. Truly, with the bright moon above, dreams in this sacred land flourish, humans and deities harmonize, and peace endures in family and country.

The main temple on Hundred Zhang Sacred Mountain is called the Princess Hall. This structure was rebuilt in the 1980s with a brick-and-wood design that is simple yet elegant. The carvings inside are exquisitely detailed, and the hall enshrines the immortal mother’s true body, which has been preserved for millennia. Her face has turned black due to years of incense smoke. During the Cultural Revolution, this statue was secretly hidden and protected by local devotees, allowing it to survive. On either side of the hall are delicate bell and drum towers. Flanking the main hall are side rooms that include “A Trip to the Immortal Land,” where visitors can stay overnight or seek dreams from the immortal mother. In front of the Princess Hall lie two huge colorful rocks shaped like burning candles, anciently called “Xiangtian Zhu” (Candles Reaching the Sky). These candles face directly toward the statue of the immortal mother in the hall, shining eternally. Legend says the Maiden Ma attained enlightenment by this stone candle. At that time, its light radiated brilliantly, visible for miles around.
