Yongchun Red Fourth Army Slogans

The Yongchun Red Fourth Army Slogans are a Yongchun County cultural relic protection unit and a classic red tourism attraction.

In August 1929, when the Red Fourth Army entered Hengkou and Yidu in Yongchun, it placed great emphasis on revolutionary propaganda work. Along the way, it painted slogans everywhere, posted proclamations, and distributed leaflets to promote revolutionary ideals and the principles of the Red Army.

To this day, two Red Army slogans remain well-preserved on the wall of the Guo Family Ancestral Hall: “The Kuomintang conspires with imperialism; the Communist Party fights imperialism” and “The city is the grave of humanity; the countryside is our paradise.” The latter slogan reflects how the revolutionary forces under the leadership of the Communist Party, through bitter lessons, came to deeply understand that only the strategy of encircling the cities from the countryside and ultimately taking the cities is the truth that suits China’s national conditions.

Other well-preserved Red Army slogans were painted in the “Siyi Shuidian” residence and Jinxingtang in Huanfeng Village, Hengkou Township. The slogans at the “Siyi Shuidian” residence include: “The Red Army takes not a needle or thread from the masses ☆”, “Overthrow the Kuomintang that conspires with imperialism. Overthrow the Kuomintang that oppresses the people. The Red Army ☆”, and “Soldiers and civilians… charge… defend… Fourth Army battlefield… patrol…”. The slogans at Jinxingtang include: “Workers organize inspection teams to prepare for armed uprisings. The Red Army”, “Workers must not work more than eight hours a day. Female workers must have one month of rest before and after childbirth, with full pay. Workers who are ill must be provided with medical expenses by their departments, with full pay. To escape suffering, workers must join the Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army. Workers organize… improve life… cancel… workers…”, “The Communist Party is the party that leads the proletarian revolution. Brave and conscious workers and peasants are welcome to join the Communist Party. The Red Army”, and “The Kuomintang becomes the Communist Party. The Communist Party overthrows the Kuomintang. The Red Army”.

Other Red Army slogans include: “Establish a government of workers’, peasants’, and soldiers’ representative councils. Peasants must organize peasant associations. The Red Army”, “Peasants organize peasant associations, overthrow local tyrants, and distribute land. The Red Army ☆”, “Overthrow imperialism. The Red Army”, “Overthrow the Kuomintang that betrays the revolution. Establish night schools for workers; unemployed workers may study for free. The Red Army”, “The Red Army is the guardian of workers and peasants—-the running dog of local tyrants and evil gentry!", “Overthrow the Kuomintang that oppresses workers, peasants, and soldiers. The Red Army”, “The Kuomintang is--a party. The Red Army”, “Increase soldiers' pay. The Red Army”, and “Revolution first, victory first!” among others.

These preserved Red Army slogans show that the Red Fourth Army was not only engaged in military operations at the time but also mobilized the masses and promoted the Party's policies and objectives. It had already taken on the special mission of being an “armed group executing revolutionary political tasks.”

In December 1982, the Red Army slogans were listed as part of the first batch of Yongchun County cultural relic protection units.
