Longxing Rock — Former Site of the Red Fourth Army Field Hospital

Longxing Rock is the former site of the Red Fourth Army field hospital, located at the northwest foot of Jianfeng Mountain in Huanfeng Village, Hengkou Township, Yongchun County.

In August 1929, Zhu De led the Red Fourth Army to Fuding in Yongchun County (now comprising Fuzhong, Fulian, and Huanfeng villages in Hengkou Township) to carry out revolutionary activities. It was the height of summer, and malaria and dysentery were rampant, with many soldiers falling ill. The Red Fourth Army established a temporary field hospital at Longxing Rock to treat the wounded and sick. Villagers from Fuding spontaneously collected wild herbs such as Elsholtzia and fireweed from the deep mountains and forests to provide careful treatment for the injured soldiers. Guo Jingyun, who practiced medicine and ran a pharmacy in Fuding, treated and cured 42 injured Red Army soldiers with great care. In gratitude, Zhu De presented him with 50 silver dollars and a French pencil.

Longxing Rock was originally built in the seventh year of the Xuande era of the Ming Dynasty (1432), destroyed during the Cultural Revolution, and rebuilt in 1981 to its original appearance. It covers an area of 200 square meters. Nearby stands a thousand-year-old yew tree that is 45 meters tall.

Legend has it that the village is surrounded by peaks, hence the name “Huanfeng” (literally “Encircling Peaks”), which is a homophonic variation. Before 1949, it belonged to Fuding Township in Erdu.
