Former Residence of Huang Pu

During the Song Dynasty, descendants of Huang Pu renovated his former residence, which was originally built during the Tang Dynasty along an ancient official road. The residence features a five-bay width, three courtyards, and covers an area of 1,000 square meters. Outside the main gate are a pair of Ming Dynasty stone pedestals carved with the "ni xiu" (mythical beast) pattern, displaying exquisite craftsmanship. Each side of the gate is adorned with a stone plaque inscribed in regular script with the characters “雾居” (Fog Abode) and “归隐” (Retreat), both written in elegant calligraphy. The stone has a yellowish hue and is believed to be original to the time of construction. Huang Pu, whose courtesy name was Wu Ju (Fog Abode), had a residence adorned with intricately carved beams and painted rafters, giving it a majestic appearance. The beams, brackets, golden pillars, and column bases are all distinctive features. The lower sections of the golden pillars are connected with mortise-and-tenon joints to an additional segment. Archaeologists believe this was an anti-seismic structure, giving the ancient building unique architectural value.

The residence has been renovated in various dynasties, with the current structure mainly dating back to the Ming Dynasty, with further repairs in the Qing Dynasty. In June 1987, it was listed as a district-level cultural relics protection unit. In 2004, descendants of Huang Pu, including Huang Zixiu, Huang Chunfu, and Huang Chunquan, initiated a restoration project, investing over 400,000 RMB to restore the old ancestral hall to its former glory. To the left and right of the Former Residence of Huang Pu, spanning the ancient post road, stand two memorial archways rich in antique charm, adding splendor to this historic official route.

He passed the imperial examination in the Tang Dynasty and served as a Senior Copyist at the Chongwen Pavilion of the Hanlin Academy. Huang Pu had two residences: one located at the foot of Huangxiang Mountain in Huangxia Village, Guohuan Town, Hanjiang District, Putian City, Fujian Province — his early residence (now Huangxia Village, Guohuan Town, Putian), and another at No. 36, Huangxiang Lane, South Back Street near Dongjiekou in Fuzhou, one of the Three Lanes and Seven Alleys — his later residence.

In August 878, during the fifth year of the Qianfu era of the Tang Dynasty, when Huang Chao led his rebel army and passed by Huang Pu’s residence at night, he recognized Huang Pu as a great scholar and ordered his soldiers to extinguish their torches and pass quietly...
