Wuping Shiyang

Shiyang is a limestone karst cave scenic area in Wuping County. In ancient times, it was called Nan’an Rock, but was renamed Shiyang because the peak rocks on the mountain resemble a lion.

Ascending Shiyang and entering the cave, you can see three statues of the ancient Dhyanibuddha enshrined inside, and the cave walls feature numerous calligraphic inscriptions left by literati throughout the ages. Reaching the summit of Shiyang, you can also enjoy a panoramic view of the Quanhu Lake landscape.

According to the Fujian General Annals, “The Immortal Maiden lived in Nan’an Rock, Wuping” and was born in the year Dingyou of the second year of the Fú reign during the Later Jin Dynasty (937 AD). The He Family Genealogy records that from birth the Immortal Maiden had an extraordinary nature; as a child, she was pure-hearted, abstained from alcohol and meat, and lived in seclusion in Shiyang for years. She never married throughout her life. She cultivated herself spiritually at Nan’an Rock and was said to possess the ability to foresee past and future events. Devotees of the time did not know her name and simply called her the “Immortal Maiden.”
