Chongzhen Taoist Temple

Chongzhen Taoist Temple is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Fujian Province.

Chongzhen Taoist Temple is located in Hongdong Village, Pingchuan Town, Wuping County, and dates back to the Qing Dynasty.

Description: Originally built in the 13th year of the Hongwu reign during the Ming Dynasty (1380), it underwent multiple renovations in the 33rd year of the Jiajing reign (1554) during the Ming Dynasty and various times during the Qing Dynasty. The existing structure is from the Qing Dynasty. It faces west and has a total width of 10 meters and a depth of 38.4 meters, covering an area of 384 square meters. The central axis from west to east consists of the gate tower, front hall, and main hall. The gate tower is a stone memorial archway with four pillars, three bays, and three stories, standing 6.7 meters tall. The plaque above the gate is inscribed with “Chongzhen Taoist Temple” in intaglio, and the lower part features relief carvings of two dragons playing with a pearl and two lions playing with a ball. The main hall has three bays in width and five pillars in depth, featuring a hybrid wooden structure of raised beams and interlocking brackets, with a hip-and-gable roof.

Protected area: An additional 20 meters outward from all sides of the building.

In 2018, Chongzhen Taoist Temple was announced by the People’s Government of Fujian Province as part of the ninth batch of provincial-level cultural heritage protection units.

Hongdong Village: Located by the Pingchuan River, Hongdong Village lies in the central part of Pingchuan Town, Wuping County, and is the seat of the Wuping County Government. Provincial Highway 309 runs through the village, offering convenient transportation and a superior geographical location. It is the former site of the old county town of Wuping. Hongdong Village has a total population of over 3,700, with 19 villager groups. The village covers a land area of 3.5 square kilometers, including 1,651.3 mu of arable land, and has a labor force of more than 2,800.
