Zhangzhou Underwater Forest

Introduction    Over the course of three years, Zhangzhou City has transformed a rare underwater forest landscape into a 115-acre mangrove nature reserve. The coastal areas of Zhangzhou are rich in mangrove resources. At the mouth of the Zhangjiang River, there lies a vast expanse of lush underwater mangroves on the beach. During high tide, these trees are submerged by seawater, with only the slightly taller ones peeking out above the surface, while during low tide, they emerge from the beach, swaying in the wind. This unique scenery has been widely publicized by the media in recent years, attracting large numbers of domestic and international tourists.

Since the establishment of the mangrove reserve, in addition to protecting and managing the extensive underwater forest resources and strengthening research, efforts have focused on developing its distinctive tourism value: viewing trees, birds, fish, and shrimp.

The trees in the underwater forest have particularly well-developed root systems. The roots of the trees intertwine in a crisscross pattern, creating shapes reminiscent of exquisite bonsai pines—diverse and captivating, like silent poetry or three-dimensional paintings. This is the scenery after the tide recedes.
