Every March, in the Higashiyama area of Kyoto, Japan, after sunset, warm lights are lit in shrines, temples, and narrow alleys. During the illumination period, some temples also hold special events and open their doors for night visits, where visitors can even enjoy traditional dance performances by maiko and geiko at Yasaka Shrine, dedicated to the deities—transporting travelers in Kyoto into a romantic and colorful imaginative world.

Starting from Shoren-in Temple at the foot of Mount Higashiyama, the approximately 5-kilometer path winds through Maruyama Park and Yasaka Shrine, extending southward to Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Along this path, 2,500 lanterns are installed. Once illuminated at sunset, the play of light and shadow on white walls, stone steps, swaying tree shadows, the soft glow of candles on the steps, and the warm lights from shops along the streets all present a uniquely beautiful view of Kyoto’s streets.
