East Hill Stele Corridor

The East Hill Stele Corridor is a cultural tourism attraction.

The East Hill Stele Corridor is located on a slope between the Wind-Rocking Stone, Guan Yu Temple, and the ancient city wall of Dongshan. Inside the northern gate of the ancient city, there is a fork in the road leading to Lotus Pond. Midway along this forest path, two stone archways stand facing each other—one low and one high. The lower one marks the entrance to the “Folklore Corner,” while the taller one is the entrance to the stele corridor. Ascend the steps and pass through the archway, and you’ll see a long stele wall that gently follows the contour of the hill, ascending gradually. Against the snow-white wall are inlaid ancient stone tablets that emit a faint bluish glow. At intervals along the wall, square and round doorways have been carved out, and the base of both walls is paved with smooth bluestone slabs, creating a corridor that allows for appreciation of the ancient steles from both sides, while also lending an open and airy feel. The top of the wall is designed in the style of an overhanging gable roof and adorned with emerald-green glazed tiles that shimmer brilliantly in the sunlight. The wall extends either standing independently, leaning against large rocks, or hugging the cliffside, enclosing an almost square-shaped garden on the slope. Within the garden, the natural incline of the hill has been cleverly utilized to create several terraced platforms of varying heights, arranged in a picturesque disorder. Meandering paths and stairways connect the different levels. The terraces are covered with lush green grass, dotted with naturally formed rocks and accented with colorful flowers and shrubs. At the northern end of the garden stands a young banyan tree, facing off against a poinciana tree at the southern end—like a nobleman adorned with jade and a flower-crowned maiden, both towering above the stele wall and exuding great charm.

The ancient steles in the corridor include proclamations, commemorative plaques, eulogies, boundary markers, folk agreements, tomb epitaphs of significant historical figures, and grave tablets. Their content covers various aspects of Dongshan’s politics, economy, military, culture, and folklore during the Ming and Qing dynasties. These steles are of great historical and artistic value, serving as crucial evidence, supplements, and references for historical research.

Even setting aside their cultural significance, these ancient steles are exceptional works of art when considered solely for their calligraphy and carving.
