Red City Ruins

(Beiping City Ruins), located north of Caoshi Market, Guoyang County. The site was once the ancient Shansang City from the Han Dynasty, featuring rammed-earth city walls with eastern and western gates. It was initially built during the Spring and Autumn Period and was known as Chuihuicui at that time. In the fourth year of the Jianwu era of the Eastern Han Dynasty (28 AD), Su Mao and Zhou Jian, generals under Wang Mang, were defeated by Liu Xiu’s forces and fled to Chuihuicui. The following year, Liu Xiu led his army to attack Chuihuicui, laying siege for over a month before employing fire attacks. The city walls were burned to a red hue, hence the name Red City. The ruins cover an area of approximately 1.3 square kilometers. The rectangular outer city was constructed from rammed earth, stretching about 900 meters from east to west and around 1,430 meters from north to south. The western wall has been leveled to form a road, with remaining sections standing 1.7 meters high, 7 meters wide at the top, and over 19 meters wide at the base. The other three walls have been incorporated into farmland. The inner city, situated on higher ground and commonly referred to as the Small City Wall, spans an area of about 1,897 square meters. The northern wall remains with a height of over 1.5 meters, and the highest point, located about 200 meters east of Zhuang Village, is locally known as the “Golden Throne Hall.” It is a key cultural relic protection unit of Anhui Province.
