Hua Zu’an is a temple shrine dedicated to Hua Tuo, an eminent physician of the Eastern Han Dynasty in China. Hua Tuo, courtesy name Yuanhua, also known as Fu, was a remarkable figure in ancient medicine. Originally built during the Tang and Song dynasties, Hua Zu’an consists of three courtyards: the shrine, Hua Tuo’s former residence, and an ancient medicinal herb garden. Covering an area of 8,600 square meters, the site features a pair of majestic stone lions inside and outside the shrine, ancient trees with twisted branches reaching into the sky, resplendent halls, and a solemn, dignified atmosphere... The statue of the divine healer portrays him as warm-hearted, kind, composed, and graceful, exuding vitality. The hall displays a wealth of medical historical documents and cultural relics. In the west side chamber, a series of colorful clay sculptures, enhanced with lighting and stage settings, captivate visitors. Amidst the bamboo groves in the east courtyard stands Hua Tuo’s Self-Contentment Pavilion, proudly rising above, with a couplet hanging from its beams: “Truly a carefree crane among the clouds, content by the flowing stream and jade-like zither.” How fittingly this depicts Hua Tuo’s life. Passing through the shrine leads you to his former residence. The Yuanhua Thatched Cottage stands atop a raised platform; the east wing, named “Longevity Chamber,” and the west wing, “Treasure Repository,” once served as his pharmacy and clinic. They display portraits of famous physicians throughout Chinese history, local legends about Hua Tuo, as well as inscriptions and paintings from scholars and experts around the world. The entire courtyard is connected by corridors, surrounded by towering pines, ancient cypresses, lush bamboos, and cold-resistant plum trees, with dense greenery complementing the shrine’s splendor. Walking past the painted corridors takes you into the ancient medicinal garden, where a medicinal pool is shaded by drooping willows and weeping locust trees, its waters glistening with a crystal-clear green. The Benevolent Water Pavilion and winding bridge stand gracefully amidst the scene, their reflections shimmering as if in a crystal palace. Among bamboo fences and thatched gates, precious medicinal herbs and flowers such as peonies, tree peonies, white chrysanthemums, daturas, roses, and palm plants are cultivated, filling the air with fragrance and displaying vibrant blooms all year round.
