Ancestral Hall of the Yuan Family and Former Residence of Yuan Dahua

The Ancestral Hall of the Yuan Family and the Former Residence of Yuan Dahua are protected as cultural relics at the provincial level in Anhui Province.

The Ancestral Hall of the Yuan Family and the Former Residence of Yuan Dahua are located in Dayuan Village, Qingtuan Town, Woyang County, Bozhou City, dating back to the Qing Dynasty.

These are late Qing Dynasty structures and both are county-level key cultural relics protection units. Both buildings feature walls constructed from bricks and stones, tiled roofs with small tiles, and well-arranged designs. The former residence currently has over 40 rooms, while the ancestral hall has more than 10. The owner of the house, Yuan Dahua, was a patriotic general in the late Qing Dynasty who once served as General Manager of the Mohe Gold Mine, Qing River Commissioner, Shandong Judicial Commissioner, and Governor of Xinjiang.

In 2012, the Ancestral Hall of the Yuan Family and the Former Residence of Yuan Dahua were designated as part of the seventh batch of provincial-level cultural relics protection units by the People's Government of Anhui Province.

(1) Ancestral Hall of the Yuan Family.

Protected area: within 5 meters outside the surrounding wall of the ancestral hall.

Construction control zone: beyond the protected area — 10 meters east to the eastern bank of the north-south ditch east of the ancestral hall, 200 meters south to the fishpond south of the original ancestral hall, 10 meters west to the western side of the north-south road west of the main road, and 150 meters north to the east-west main road from Yin Temple to Liucun.

(2) Former Residence of Yuan Dahua.

Protected area: within 2 meters outside the surrounding wall of the former residence.

Construction control zone: beyond the protected area — 8 meters east to the north-south road east of the former residence, 23 meters south to the east-west main road, 28 meters west to the north-south main road in the village, and 38 meters north to the east-west main ditch north of the former residence.

Yuan Dahua (1851–1935), styled Xingnan, was a native of Dayuan Village, Qingtuan District, Woyang County. After entering the imperial examination system and receiving a scholar’s title, he grew restless with a quiet life and went to the Guandong region in the 17th year of the Guangxu reign (1891) to seek opportunities. At that time, Wu, who was responsible for foreign affairs, sent Yuan Dahua to Blagoveshchensk, Vladivostok, and Double City to scout Russian military movements. Later, he investigated the Mohe Gold Mine along the E'mu'er River, proposed gold mining methods, and earned the appreciation of Li Hongzhang, who entrusted him with important responsibilities and specially granted him the title of Tongzhi, appointing him as General Manager of Mohe.
