Mengcheng Confucius Temple
Mengcheng Confucius Temple is a cultural tourism attraction.
Mengcheng Confucius Temple, also known as the Imperial College or Confucian School, was first built in 1284 during the Yuan Dynasty. It served as a site for Confucius worship, ceremonial performances, and education. The temple complex is arranged from front to back with the Lingxing Gate, Pan Pond, Pan Bridge, Dacheng Gate, and Dacheng Hall (where Confucius is revered as the "Great Achiever and Exemplary Teacher"). The Lingxing Gate faces directly onto Qingyun Street, symbolizing the notion of "ascending to success in one’s career." To the southwest of the Lingxing Gate lies a well called the Sacred Well. The Dacheng Gate is connected to the Temple of Meritorious Officials to the east and the Temple of Local Sages to the west. In front of the Dacheng Hall, there are side halls on both the eastern and western sides; the eastern side hall is the Shrine of Chastity and Filial Piety, while the western side hall is the Shrine of Loyalty and Righteousness. The eastern courtyard houses the Wenchang Pavilion, and the western courtyard contains the Minglun Hall.
The Dacheng Hall is the main structure of the Confucius Temple and is the most completely preserved and grandest Confucian hall in the Huaibei region. At the center of the hall is enshrined the spirit tablet and statue of Confucius, flanked by the statues and tablets of Yan Hui, Zengzi, Zisi, and Mencius. Above the hall hang three imperial plaques inscribed with “Model Teacher for All Ages,” “Never Before Has There Been Such a Man,” and “Matching Heaven and Earth,” all written by Emperors Kangxi and Qianlong. The front platform of the hall is over one meter high and is surrounded by white marble railings, further enhancing its majestic presence.
Confucius (551–479 BCE), whose given name was Qiu and courtesy name Zhongni, was a native of Zouyi (present-day southeastern Qufu, Shandong Province) in the State of Lu during the Spring and Autumn period. He was a philosopher, educator, and statesman of the late Spring and Autumn period, the founder of Confucianism, and one of the most influential figures in Chinese history and culture. His impact extends globally, especially across Southeast Asia, making him one of the world’s cultural icons.
Confucius’s ancestors were the descendants of Weizi Qi, the elder half-brother of the last ruler of the Shang Dynasty, King Zhou. Weizi Qi inherited the Shang lineage and was enfeoffed in the State of Song. His sixth-generation descendant, Kong Fu Jia, was the first to adopt the surname Kong. Kong Fu Jia’s fifth-generation descendant, Shuliang He (also known as Kong He), fled to the State of Lu to escape turmoil and later settled in Zou,… More details about Confucius ++
