It was first built in 1966 and rebuilt in 2007, with a construction area of 440 square meters. The memorial records 719 martyrs, displays the stories of 20 martyrs, exhibits 46 relics, and houses the ashes of 15 martyrs. In addition, there is a 109-square-meter monument to the tomb of Zhou Yuan. The memorial has 3 management staff, including 1 director and 2 tour guides.
The exhibition hall of the memorial is simply and solemnly arranged. Upon entering the gate, the first thing you see is Mao Zedong’s inscription: “Eternal Glory to the People’s Heroes.” The eastern wall features a scene of the meeting of Red Army forces, while the western wall depicts a charge into battle. There are Mao Zedong’s inscriptions, large photos, and explanatory materials of 20 martyrs. The ten martyrs — Peng Xuefeng, Zhou Yuan, Luo Huilian, Guo Jiahe, Gong Jian, Yang Ziyi, Lu Xihuang, Shang Zhizhong, Li Jichen, and Cai Enming — were martyred during the War of Resistance Against Japan; Zhang Quangui, Zhang Didong, and an unnamed little hero were martyred during the Liberation War; Sun Tingfang, Ma Jianjun, Hou Litin, Yu Xiaohui, Liu Weidong, Li Jidong, and Ma Lianchao were martyred during the socialist construction period. The exhibition hall also includes a battle map and summary of the Caowei Battle, as well as a diagram and introduction of the Banqiao Battle during the Liberation War. The entire exhibition hall can accommodate 800 visitors at a time and receives about 50,000 visitors for commemoration each year.
