Taibai Study Hall

A building in the style of traditional southern Anhui residential architecture, it is the finest venue on the Buddhist sacred site of Jiuhua Mountain for receiving literati and poets.

The main hall is tall, solemn, and simple in design, with bright windows and clean furnishings, set in an elegant environment that uniquely showcases the characteristics of southern Anhui architecture. Within the courtyard stand two ancient ginkgo trees, commonly known as "living fossils," which are remnants from the Tertiary period. Beside them is the Taibai Well, first dug during the Song Dynasty. Legend has it that Li Bai once brewed tea with its spring water here.

Exiting the Taibai Study Hall, you can visit other sites such as Fahua Temple and Li'an Nunnery.

The Taibai Study Hall was initially built in the early Jiāxī years of the Southern Song Dynasty (circa 1237 AD) by Cai Yuanlong, the magistrate of Qingyang County, to commemorate Li Bai’s second visit to Jiuhua Mountain. It was rebuilt and completed on the birthday of Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva in 1991, covering an area of 1,800 square meters. The hall sells high-end writing materials and calligraphy and paintings by famous artists.

Transportation

The Taibai Study Hall is adjacent to Dongya Hotel and Julong Grand Hotel. It can be reached by walking straight along the road at the front of Jiuhua Mountain from the mountain’s main gate until you reach the entrance of Jiuhua Street.

The Poet Immortal Li Bai (February 8, 701 – December 762), styled Taibai and also known as Qinglian Jushi or the “Banished Immortal,” with the nickname Li Twelve, was a poet of the Tang Dynasty and is often mentioned alongside Du Fu as “Li-Du.” Li Bai’s poetry collection, The Complete Works of Li Taibai, has been passed down through generations. His representative works include “Quiet Night Thought,” “Drinking Alone under the Moon,” and “Dreaming of the Goddess on Mount Tai and Bidding Farewell.” He reached heights in ancient romanticist literature, song-form poetry, and seven-character quatrains that later poets struggled to match. Li Bai achieved his greatest success in yuefu poetry, song-form poetry, and quatrains; his style is bold and unrestrained, fresh and graceful, rich in imagination, with marvelous artistic conception and language.
