Xiuning Tongantang

Xiuning Tongantang is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Tongantang is located in Xiuning County, Huangshan City, dating back to the Qing Dynasty.

Tongantang is situated in Haiyang Town, Xiuning County, at No. 152 Qining Street, Qining Community. Built during the Qing Dynasty, the building faces south and is composed of a main house, an east wing room, a west wing room, a west side room, a kitchen, and front and rear courtyards. It occupies a land area of 1,309.6 square meters and has a construction area of 1,373.11 square meters. The main structure consists of five sections: the first is a three-bay entrance hall with a three-bay, four-pillar, five-story style gate tower; the second is a three-bay section featuring a boat-roofed corridor in the front, a gabled roof in the central bay, and five-purlin and three-purlin beams supported by posts, with a plaque reading “Youren Hall” hanging on the screen wall; the third is a three-bay section where the central bay is open as a hall, and the side bays are enclosed to serve as wing rooms; the fourth is a five-bay section with the central bay open as a passageway, while the side and end bays are merged and enclosed as wing rooms; the fifth is a five-bay section with the central bay open and the side and end bays enclosed as wing rooms, with the second and third floors fully open. Tongantang features side rooms on both sides of the main house and is arranged with front and rear courtyards. The entire structure includes brick carvings of figures and flowers on the gate tower, wood carvings of flowers and auspicious patterns on brackets, beams, trays, elephant trunks, braces, and struts, as well as stone elements such as column bases and pedestals, all exquisitely carved and vividly detailed, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship. As a residence of Huizhou merchants from the Qing Dynasty, Tongantang remains well-preserved, featuring typical Qing-style architecture and elaborate carvings. Its private garden is a rare example among surviving Huizhou-style buildings and serves as an invaluable physical resource for studying the architectural history of Huizhou merchants during the Qing Dynasty.

In 2019, Tongantang was designated as a Provincial-Level Cultural Relics Protection Unit in the eighth batch by the People’s Government of Anhui Province.

On October 7, 2019, Xiuning Tongantang was included in the eighth batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.
