The Four Pagodas of Haiyang

The Four Pagodas of Haiyang are cultural relics protected at the provincial level in Anhui Province.

The Four Pagodas of Haiyang are located in Xiuning County, Huangshan City, dating back to the Ming Dynasty.

The Four Pagodas of Haiyang refer to four pagodas—Xunfeng, Dingfeng, Fulang, and Wanfeng—located to the south of Haiyang Town in Xiuning County, Huangshan City.

Xunfeng Pagoda is located on the eastern side of Yujishan Mountain near Xiawenxi Village in Haiyang Town, Xiuning County. It was built in the first year of the Longqing era of the Ming Dynasty (1567), featuring a pavilion-style brick pagoda structure. The pagoda has six sides and seven stories, with an overall height of about 35 meters. Each floor has four arched gates, and inside there is a spiral staircase with 168 steps leading directly to the top. The pagoda is topped with a gourd-shaped finial. Inside the pagoda, there are murals with Buddhist themes that, despite their age, still have clearly visible lines.

Dingfeng Pagoda, also known as Tingfeng Pagoda, is located on the western side of Yujishan Mountain in Xiawenxi Village, Haiyang Town, Xiuning County, directly opposite Xunfeng Pagoda. It was built in the 23rd year of the Jiajing era of the Ming Dynasty (1544), featuring a solid pavilion-style brick pagoda with six sides and five stories, standing about 30 meters tall.

Fulang Pagoda, also known as “Shuikou Shengao,” is located in Fulang Village (also referred to as Fulang Village in Wan’an Town) south of Haiyang Town, Xiuning County, facing Xunfeng Pagoda across a stream. It was built in the 22nd year of the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty (1594), featuring a pavilion-style brick pagoda. With eight sides and seven stories, only four stories currently remain, but the exterior remains intact, standing approximately 17 meters tall. The protruding double eaves built from bricks showcase fine craftsmanship.

Wanfeng Pagoda is located in Wangxi Village, Haiyang Town (some sources also cite it as being in Taiyangwu Mountain on the site of Wangjin Bridge Village, Xiuyang Township; however, it is not included among what were formerly called the Three Pagodas of Haiyang. Note by Fu). It was built during the Jiajing era of the Ming Dynasty. This is a six-sided, five-story pavilion-style brick pagoda, approximately 20 meters tall, with the bottom layer being 2.7 meters high and the diameter decreasing progressively with each higher level. The top features a pagoda finial. Originally, there was a spiral staircase inside the pagoda leading to the top.

In 2012, the Four Pagodas of Haiyang were designated as part of the seventh batch of provincial-level cultural heritage protection units by the People’s Government of Anhui Province.

Protected area: Each individual pagoda's base is surrounded by a protected zone extending 5 meters east, south, west, and north.

Construction control zone: Extending 25 meters east, south, west, and north beyond the protected area.
