Shuinan Bridge

Shuinan Bridge is a cultural relic protection unit of Huangshan City.

Shuinan Bridge is located in Xiashuinan Village, Wan’an Town, Xiuning County, dating back to the Ming Dynasty.

Shuinan Bridge, also known as Gucheng Bridge, is located at the eastern foot of Guchengyan Mountain in Wan’an Town, spanning the Huangjiang River to lead to Shuinan Village. In the 10th year of the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty (1582), it was initiated by Gao Shi, the prefect of Huizhou, and donated by the local resident Huang Tingkan, and was then called Gaogong Bridge. It was renovated in the 55th year of the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty (1716), collapsed in the 38th year of the Qianlong era (1773), and was rebuilt in the 52nd year by the local resident Wang Cheng with funding and construction by Cheng Mingzhen. The bridge has 10 piers and 11 arches. Stone railings were built on the central east-west side of the bridge, with a pavilion erected atop them. At the stone steps leading up to the bridge on the northern side, there is a two-story pavilion: the upper floor served as living quarters, while the lower floor was run by the bridge keeper, offering tea and pastries to travelers for rest. For several hundred years before the construction of highways, it was the essential route for visitors from Qimen, Yi County, and Xiuning heading toward Tunxi. As a result, Gucheng Bridge once bustled with traffic and thrived in prosperity.

It serves as the southern gateway to the renowned Huangshan scenic area, just over 40 kilometers from the Huangshan Scenic Zone. It connects to Tunxi, the location of the city government, and lies close to Huangshan Airport. The Wan’gan Railway and Tunhuang Highway run across the town, providing convenient transportation and an exceptionally strategic location.
