Former Site of Tongren Hospital

The former site of Tongren Hospital is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Anhui.

The former site of the Anglican Church’s “Tongren Hospital” in Anqing, also known as “St. James’ Hospital,” is located at No. 150 Shuangjing Street, Yingjiang District, Anqing City, Anhui Province, within the grounds of the Naval Anqing Hospital (formerly the PLA 116th Hospital). It is the predecessor of the Naval Anqing Hospital. This Qing Dynasty–era building was established in 1901 and was one of the two larger and more fully equipped general hospitals in Anhui Province before the liberation.

According to historical records, the Anglican Church’s “Tongren Hospital” in Anqing was built with the support of the American Episcopal Church as part of its missionary efforts and was completed in 1906. Its founder was American medical doctor Henry Taylor (Chinese name: Mr. Dai Shihuang), who also served as the hospital’s first director. The architectural layout, technology, and equipment of the hospital were largely Western-style. Eight buildings still stand today, forming a well-preserved and uniquely styled complex of modern Western architecture in the region.

The former site of Tongren Hospital should include the ward building, the director’s villa, the advanced nursing school building, and others, totaling eight structures.
