Former Site of Anqing Internal Armory

The Former Site of Anqing Internal Armory is a cultural relic protection unit of Anqing City.

Anqing Internal Armory, also known as "Anqing Armory," was the earliest modern government-run armament factory in the late Qing Dynasty. It was established in 1860 by Zeng Guofan at Huangshijii in Huaining, Anhui, and Daguanting in Anqing. The scientist Hua Hengfang once oversaw the construction of China’s first steamship here. In 1864, it was relocated to Nanjing and renamed Jinling Internal Armory. (Located 15 meters north of the office building of the Anqing Waterway Administration. It was speculated during an official inspection that this site might be the ruins of the Anqing Armory, leading local authorities to designate it as such. Later, the Anqing Cultural Relics Bureau found that this area was a lake in 1861, and the site was then reassigned to the area within the People's Road No. 1 Primary School and the Anqing Dyeing and Weaving General Factory, where a cultural relic marker was erected.)

The current Residence of Scholar Zhang (Renshijia Dai) at Renjiapo is considered the former site of Anqing Internal Armory, with Zhang Wenhu having left detailed records about the location and personnel of the Anqing Internal Armory between 1861 and 1863.

Zeng Guofan (1811–1872), originally named Zicheng, courtesy name Bohan, also known as Disheng, posthumously honored as Wenzheng, was from Xiangxiang, Changsha Prefecture, Hunan (now Xiangyin County, Hunan Province). He was a military strategist, Neo-Confucian scholar, politician, and calligrapher during China’s Qing Dynasty, one of the “Revitalization Statesmen,” as well as a literary figure and the founder of the “Xiangxiang School” of late Qing prose. He served as Viceroy of Liangjiang, Viceroy of Zhili, and Grand Secretary of the Wuying Hall, and was granted the title of First Class Yiyong Marquis. Originally from Baiyangping, Xiangxiang, Changsha Prefecture, Hunan (now Tianziping, Heye Town, Shuangfeng County, Hunan Province).
