Study Place of Chen Yannian and Chen Qiaonian
The Study Place of Chen Yannian and Chen Qiaonian is a cultural relic protection unit of Anqing City.
In the late Guangxu period, Chen Duxiu’s adoptive father, Chen Yanshu, built a residence at Nanshuiguan in Anqing. It had three main gates: one traditional Chinese-style, one Western-style, and a back gate in between, totaling two--rooms. In the early years of the Republic of China, Chen Yanshu suffered a failed trade with British merchants in Hangzhou, leading to the residence being sealed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Beiyang government. After the failure of the Second Revolution, it was further sealed by the Anhui warlord Ni Sichong. In the 1980s, when a waterworks was constructed, most of the residence was demolished. This was the place where Chen Duxiu’s sons, the martyrs Chen Yannian and Chen Qiaonian, lived and grew up. As early as 1990, the Anqing Municipal People’s Government listed it as a municipal-level key cultural relic protection unit.
