Chongwen Tower in Anqing

Chongwen Tower in Anqing is a cultural heritage conservation unit of Anqing City.

Located in the northwest corner of Anqing No. 3 Middle School in Anqing City stands a three-story Western-style building named Chongwen Tower, built in the 1930s. It is the former site of Chongwen Middle School. As you pass by the Catholic church next to Xilin Street, you can see this old building, which gives off a sense of traveling back in time. This old, south-facing, three-story building was once the site of Chongwen Middle School during the Republican era, and is commonly referred to as Chongwen Tower.

The building features a blend of Chinese and Western architectural styles, facing south, with a brick-and-wood structure and solid walls made of flat-laid blue bricks. The traditional Huizhou-style horse-head walls, reminiscent of the Ming and Qing dynasties, are well preserved to this day. It also incorporates modern Huizhou-style architectural elements such as overhanging eaves and other traditional Chinese architectural features, along with distinctly Western-style lines. The modern cement (concrete) railings have long been hanging in the air, while the rare terrazzo stairs have been polished exceptionally smooth by time.
