Rouge Well

The Rouge Well is a cultural relic protection unit of Anqing City.

The Rouge Well is located in Wangwan Group, Zhangfashan Neighborhood Committee, Meicheng Town, on the former site of Qiao Gong’s residence, about 3 kilometers east of Qianshan County. Its story is recorded in the Anqing Prefecture Annals, Tianzhu Mountain Annals, and the Biography of Zhou Yu in the Book of Wu within the Records of the Three Kingdoms. In the late Eastern Han Dynasty, Qiao Xuan’s two daughters, Da Qiao and Xiao Qiao, were chosen as concubines by the Eastern Wu generals Sun Ce and Zhou Yu, respectively. As the two sisters often came to the well to groom themselves,… rouge powder fell into the well, turning the water pink, which led later generations to call it the “Rouge Well.” The well was excavated and restored in 1993. It now stands on a square platform, consisting of a vertical circular stone well shaft, enclosed by iron railings. The well walls are entirely made of stone, 2.4 meters thick; the well opening is about 0.7 meters in diameter, the well curb is 0.4 meters deep, and it covers an area of approximately 16 square meters. The well is dry with many debris inside. Given that the Rouge Well is mentioned in numerous historical texts and has been a source of poetic inspiration for literati throughout the ages, the People's Government of Qianshan County designated it as a key cultural relics protection unit in October 1986.

Established in April 2003, it covers an area of 3.5 square kilometers, comprising 20 residential groups, 350 residential buildings, 2,858 households, and a permanent population of 9,062, including 6,068 registered residents, 1,203 temporary residents, and 4,545 floating residents.
