Former Residence of Cheng Changgeng

The former residence of Cheng Changgeng is a cultural relic protection unit of Anqing City.

The former residence of Cheng Changgeng is located in Qianjin Group, Chengjiajing Village, Wanghe Town. It faces south, has two bays in width, features white exterior walls, a double-sloped roof, eaves extending out at both the front and rear, and is covered with “dustpan tiles.” The western part of the residence was demolished and replaced with a new building. Currently, only three rooms remain, covering an area of 115 square meters.

Cheng Changgeng (1811–1880), whose given name was Wenxie and courtesy name Yushan, was a native of Chengjiajing, Qianshan County, during the Qing Dynasty. He was one of the founders of Peking Opera and was honored with titles such as “Leader of the Anhui Troupe” and “Father of Peking Opera.” A “Cheng Changgeng Exhibition Hall” is available for visiting at the Qianshan County Museum.

Wanghe Town: Located in the southwestern part of Qianshan County, Wanghe Town borders the Qianshui River to the east and faces Huaining County across the Changhe River to the south. It covers an area of 96 square kilometers, has a population of 54,000, and includes 40,000 mu of arable land. The town administers 21 villages and one neighborhood committee.

The town is situated between latitude 30°27′–30°36′ north and longitude 116°26′–116°37′ east. It enjoys a mild climate with distinct seasons, abundant rainfall, fertile soil, and favorable farming conditions. As a major agricultural town, it contributes one-tenth of the county’s total grain output.
