White Cloud Cliff Carvings

The White Cloud Cliff Carvings are a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Anhui Province.

Also known as Tiger Head Cliff, White Cloud Cliff is located in Linzhuang Group, Chazhuang Village, Tianzhushan Town. The carvings on White Cloud Cliff utilize the natural rock faces to record texts or feature statues. A variety of techniques such as single-line intaglio, subtractive flat carving, shallow relief carving, and sunken carving were employed to create diverse and vivid stone artworks. The inscriptions feature scripts including seal, clerical, and regular script, with calligraphy that is rigorous and powerful, balanced in spacing. The content of the carvings is extensive, involving inscriptions by literati and Buddhist devotees from the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, totaling up to six sites, among which those by the famous Ming Dynasty literary figure Li Yuanyang are the most numerous. Examples include the “Iron Flute Niche,” as well as the Qing Dynasty Qianlong-era inscription “Transcending the Material World” by Zhang Qiuyu. Halfway up White Cloud Cliff, there used to be the hermitage of the Taoist Lu Daoren, now in ruins, but a stone cave remains, with three seated Buddha statues inlaid on the cave wall. Each Buddha statue is 70 centimeters tall, although their facial features have worn away and are now difficult to discern.

The White Cloud Cliff Carvings and the Valley Stream Cliff Carvings of Tianzhushan Mountain are considered a unified artistic ensemble. In 2001, these two sites were listed as national key cultural relics protection units.
