Former Residence of Zhang Henshui

The former residence of Zhang Henshui is a cultural relic protection unit of Anhui Province.

The former residence of Zhang Henshui is located in Huangling Group, Huangling Village, Yujing Town. Built on a prominent loess ridge, it is also known as the "Loess Study." The loess ridge is rectangular in shape, with Changchun Reservoir to the north and Lingtou neighborhood to the south. Zhang Henshui spent his youth here, engaging in diligent study and literary creation.

In recognition of the great academic research value of Zhang Henshui’s literary works, the People’s Government of Qianshan County designated the former residence as a county-level key cultural relic protection unit in October 1986 and established a Zhang Henshui exhibition room at Wanguangyuan.

Zhang Henshui (1895–1967) was a renowned Chinese journalist and master of traditional episodic novels. He produced a prolific body of work, among which Spring Ming Foreign History, The Golden Powder Family, Love in a Fallen City, and Eighty-One Dreams are his most representative works.

The original structure of Zhang Henshui’s former residence consisted of four tiled single-story rooms and one courtyard, built in the late Qing Dynasty. The existing building was largely renovated during the Republican era, featuring white walls and gray tiles, a single ridge with two slopes and three trusses, facing south, with a width of 14.55 meters, a depth of 0.7 meters, and an area of approximately 102 square meters. The property was originally farmed by the father of the current owner, Ding Xianwen, who was a tenant of the Zhang family. After Zhang Henshui’s passing, the property was bequeathed to them.

Protected area: To the east, bounded by adjacent residential buildings and extending in a straight line to the edge of the pond; to the south, up to the pond; to the west, bounded by a stone wall extending in a straight line southward to the pond; to the north, up to the farmland.

Construction control zone: A 20-meter buffer extending outward from the boundaries of the protected area.
