Nie Family’s Decorative Wall and Yang Family’s House

The Nie Family’s Decorative Wall and Yang Family’s House are protected cultural heritage sites of Qianshan City.

In 2005, when the expressway “Liulian Line” passed through an ancient residential complex in Wanling Village, Meicheng Town, among the buildings requiring relocation and resettlement were the Nie Family’s Decorative Wall, the front hall of the Wang Family House, and the front hall of the Yang Family House. Between 2006 and 2007, the construction team from the Anhui Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology relocated one decorative wall (the second gatehouse) from the Nie Family’s house and combined two halls from the Yang Family’s house, rebuilding them at a new site west of “Wanguang Garden” in the county museum. The two relocated structures have now been integrated into a single design featuring two courtyards and three sections, using a mixed post-and-lintel and Dougong (bracket arm) system, with a rolled shed porch in front of the central hall. The building faces south with a north orientation; it is 7.55 meters wide and 19.5 meters deep, covering an area of approximately 147 square meters.

The second gatehouse of the Nie Family’s house was designated as a third batch county-level key cultural relics protection unit by the People's Government of Qianshan County on January 4, 1992.

The building has a single ridge and double slopes, with gray bricks and black tiles. The interior decoration includes a decorative wall at the main entrance of the first courtyard, built with a “Sumeru pedestal,” bracket sets under the eaves, and a relief carving of a “qilin” (mythical Chinese creature) pattern on the top of the door lintel, with the characters “Zhilan Yushu” (meaning noble sons and daughters) engraved in relief. The rear hall is fitted with latticed wooden doors and windows.
