Huangjiao Island
Huangjiao Island is located 11 kilometers southeast of Jinqing Town, in the sea. To its northwest and southwest are Baiguo Mountain and Daoshi Guan Island, respectively, each about a kilometer apart across waterways. The island covers an area of 2.04 square kilometers, with a roughly arc-shaped layout that forms a large bay in the middle. Its highest point, Tiandengzhan Mountain, rises 173.5 meters above sea level. The island has a population of 200 residents, who live in Huanghai Village and Shantou Village
as well as Changda Ancient Village, all under the jurisdiction of Huanglang Township. The sea area to the east of the island is called Jiaotongyang, which faces Dachen Island across the water. Nearby
there is a local seafood delicacy known as "wangchao," a small soft-bodied creature resembling a baby octopus, traditionally believed to be highly nutritious. Islanders
mostly engage in raft-style nori (seaweed) farming, which also offers a unique culinary experience.
Huangjiao was formerly known as "Huangjiao Mountain" and was one of the key navigational landmarks for maritime traffic in ancient times. It was first recorded in the Ming Dynasty’s Zheng He Navigation Chart. In the early years of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the island, along with Langji Mountain and the Longmen Islands, was occupied by remnant hostile forces,
which frequently harassed coastal areas. In the spring of 1950, the People’s Liberation Army captured Langji Mountain, and the following spring, they successively eliminated the remaining forces entrenched on Huangjiao
Island and Daoshi Guan. In 1952, under the planning of Hu Zongnan, military forces stationed on Dachen Island deployed
for the Huangjiao Counterattack. On June 13, Wang Xiangyi led two warships and 15 motor sailboats in a surprise attack, capturing the adjacent Daoshi Guan Island. After fierce fighting, the invading forces were eventually repelled. Following this battle, until January 1955 when the PLA captured Yijiangshan Island, the military defenses near Jinqing and the Dachen garrison remained largely in a standoff

Huangjiao Island is long and narrow, with its ridgeline stretching nearly 5 kilometers, though its narrowest point is only a few hundred meters wide, featuring numerous capes. Walking southward along the winding ridges is like strolling along a seaside corridor, with ever-changing seascapes in every direction. Especially from the southern tip of the island, the view of the Longmen Archipelago—where the islands stretch flat, gradually deepening and fading into the distance—is considered a spectacular sight. The western side of the island is called Huangjiao Tidal Flat. At low tide, vast mudflats are exposed, where clam farming bases can be found. Tourists can take mudflat boats to slide across the muddy shallows and dig for clams, an activity that offers a unique coastal experience. The island is rich in local folklore, with touching legends such as those of "Husband-Waiting Rock," "Tiandengzhan," "Widow’s Cliff," and "Duoduo Gate."
Traveling southward along the island feels like strolling along a maritime corridor, with ever-changing seascapes unfolding in all directions. The view from the southern tip of the island toward the Longmen Archipelago is particularly picturesque—the scattered islets stretch out flat, gradually fading into the distance. On the western side of the island lies Huangjiao Tidal Flat, which reveals vast mudflats and shoals at low tide. There is also a razor clam farming base here, where visitors can take mudflat boats to glide across the soft mud and dig for clams, offering a unique coastal experience. The island is rich in local folklore, with touching legends associated with sites such as Husband-Waiting Reef, Sky Lantern Stand, Widow’s Rock, and Rudder-Pulling Gate.
The island remains undeveloped, and the local people are simple and kind. However, one thing to note is that since it’s an island—even though it’s close to the mainland—tides must be carefully observed. It’s not ideal if you happen to return during low tide, as you may have to stay overnight on the island.
