Martyrs' Cemetery of Chen Anbao

The Martyrs' Cemetery of Chen Anbao is a Zhejiang Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit, a classic red tourism attraction, and a patriotic education base.

The Martyrs' Cemetery of Chen Anbao is located on Phoenix Mountain in Hengjie Town, Luqiao District, Taizhou City, Zhejiang Province.

In September 1995, the People's Government of Luqiao District built the cemetery in honor of the martyr. Li Xiannian, then President of China, inscribed the epitaph “Immortalized in History: Fallen Soldiers in the War of Resistance Against Japan” on Chen Anbao’s tomb, while Zhang Aiping wrote the title “Martyrs' Cemetery of Chen Anbao.” The cemetery covers an area of 2,800 square meters. Its façade features a large cast iron relief sculpture of the general’s portrait, beneath which on the lower left is a giant fist sculpture, and on the lower right are eight shells symbolizing the eight-year War of Resistance. On the right side of the cemetery is an inscribed stone tablet by General Zhang Aiping: “Died for the Nation, Immortalized in History,” and on the left is one by General Zheng Dongguo: “Majestic Spirit of China, Eternal National Soul.” There are also inscribed tablets with eulogies by Zhu De and Liu Shaoqi in front of the tomb. Ascending the memorial path leads to Chen Anbao’s grave. To the upper right of the grave stands a 10-meter-high tombstone in the shape of a triangular prism, inscribed with the title “Tomb of the Anti-Japanese Hero General Chen Anbao.” The entire cemetery exudes grandeur and solemnity. Behind and to the right of the cemetery is a uniquely designed pavilion, beneath which is the Chen Anbao Martyrs Memorial Hall. The exhibition inside is divided into three main sections: “Sacrificed for the Country,” introducing Chen Anbao’s life and deeds; “Blood and Fire, United Against the Enemy,” displaying precious photos from the global anti-fascist struggle and China’s War of Resistance; and “Striving for Strength, Building the Hometown,” celebrating the local people’s splendid achievements in inheriting the martyr’s legacy and building a modern socialist society.

The Martyrs' Cemetery of Chen Anbao is a Taizhou Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit and was designated as a Zhejiang Provincial Patriotic Education Base by the Publicity Department of the Zhejiang Provincial Committee in December 2007.

Chen Anbao (1891–1939), courtesy name Shanfu, was born in 1891 in Mayuan Village, Hengjie Township, Huangyan County, Zhejiang (now Mayuan Village, Hengjie Town, Luqiao District, Taizhou City). He was the commander of the 29th Army and concurrently the 79th Division of the National Revolutionary Army, and was posthumously promoted to General by the Nationalist Government.

In September 2014, Chen Anbao was listed in the first group of 300 famous anti-Japanese martyrs and heroic groups released by the Ministry of Civil Affairs.
