Mangshan Electric Power Science Popularization Corridor

The Mangshan Electric Power Science Popularization Corridor is a national A-level tourist attraction.

Beijing’s “Underground Thousand-Meter Electric Power Science Popularization Corridor,” stretching 1,100 meters in length and leading directly to an underground power plant, is primarily designed to educate elementary, middle, and high school students about electric power knowledge. The content is divided into five sections: Introduction to Electric Power Knowledge, Overview of the Electric Power Industry, Hydropower, Pumped-Storage Power Generation, and the Shisanling Pumped-Storage Power Plant. The Shisanling Pumped-Storage Power Plant makes full use of the unique functions and architectural structure of a modern large-scale pumped-storage facility by installing 101 light boxes of various sizes along both sides of the tunnel, allowing visitors to gain electric power science knowledge in a relaxed tour environment. It helps people learn about the history of electricity and its future development in China and around the world, bringing science and technology closer to the general public.

From Faraday’s discovery of electromagnetic induction in 1831 and Edison’s invention of the electric light in 1879 to the widespread application of modern electricity; from the earliest electric lights in Empress Dowager Cixi’s palace in China to the Three Gorges Project and famous power plants at home and abroad; from the life stories of renowned scientists to the principles of various types of power generation — the corridor covers it all. Walking through it is like reliving over a hundred years of humanity’s journey in understanding and using electricity. Since its opening more than a year ago, the science corridor has received over 100,000 visitors, with a peak of nearly 2,000 visitors in a single day. It has been recognized by the Science and Technology Association as a “Beijing Science Popularization Education Base.”
