Claimed to be the best in Taichung—super appetizing "stinky tofu" even vegetarians can enjoy

Changping Road in North District, Taichung, actually has many street food snacks. This spot, “Vegetarian Big Noodles Q? · Stinky Tofu,” is highly recommended by netizens. Whenever an article about stinky tofu is written, there’s always someone commenting to recommend this place on Changping Road—the “Vegetarian Big Noodles Q?, Stinky Tofu.” A few even said it’s the best stinky tofu they’ve had in Taichung!

This “Vegetarian Big Noodles Q? · Stinky Tofu” is located on Section 2 of Changping Road, near the intersection with Section 2 of Chongde Road. There’s a Watsons nearby. In the morning, “203 Breakfast Shop” operates here, and only after it closes does “Vegetarian Big Noodles Q? · Stinky Tofu” take over at noon... Speaking of “203 Breakfast Shop,” it’s really been around for ages—I remember it being here for at least 20 years... Back when I lived nearby, I’d visit almost every other day. I really liked their stir-fried noodles—just green onions and sauce, simple but delicious...

There are a few seats inside, and two more under the arcade. Only Feitianxuan was here that day, so she sat right under the arcade. And to avoid drawing too much attention and affecting the shop’s business, she only used her phone to take photos—everyone, please bear with the quality!

The pickled radish shreds on the table aren’t for the stinky tofu—they’re meant to go with the big noodles q?. But honestly, I’m not a huge fan of that soft and chewy texture of big noodles q?, so I just ordered the stinky tofu.

Stinky Tofu – NT$40

Not sure if this is the exact price—I referenced online info. Please let me know if there’s any mistake... The portion includes five pieces of stinky tofu, along with some pickles and shredded cucumber...

Compared to other commercially available stinky tofu, the portions at Changping Road’s “Vegetarian Big Noodles Q? · Stinky Tofu” aren’t small. For the price, it’s quite generous... When it’s served, the tofu already has some soy sauce drizzled on it. The chili oil was added by me. Eating spicy food in summer seems to whet the appetite, though I wonder if eating too much spice makes one’s temper more explosive!? XD

The tofu skin is slightly crispy—not extremely so—but the inside is quite soft and tender, with visible pores... To be honest, the texture was a bit different from what I expected. Maybe as a carnivore, I lack the refined palate. Its aroma and funkiness are somewhat different from typical Taiwanese-style stinky tofu... But as a vegetarian option, it’s probably pretty good...

The pickles on the side, however, were refreshingly crisp and helped whet my appetite... Nearby, you’ll also find “Xinxin Shop,” “Magang Tofu Pudding,” and “Hong Kong-Style Salty Crispy Chicken”—all local eats within walking distance... After eating, I suddenly remembered there’s another vegetarian stinky tofu place in Fengjia that does great business too—if you’re interested, you could compare the two...
