Fumiao
Fumiao is a cultural tourism attraction.
Fumiao is located between Renmin Road and Beijie in Huzhou City. Commonly known as the "temple within a temple," it is one of the "Three Wonders of Huzhou." Originally built in November 934 during the Taihe era of the Later Tang Dynasty in the Five Dynasties period, it served as the Huzhou City God Temple.
From its founding until the Ming Dynasty, the Huzhou City God Temple was called the Prefectural City God Temple (abbreviated as Fumiao), and it hosted three generations of city god deities. The first was the “Prosperity and Peace King” of the Later Tang Dynasty in 934 during the Qingtai era. The second was the “Mighty Spirit Duke,” conferred in 1369 during the second year of the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty. The third city god deity was honored as the “Huzhou Prefectural City God Deity, Lord Lao,” starting in 1573 during the first year of the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty.
In ancient times, Fumiao, much like the Southern Temple, Hangzhou’s City God Temple, and Suzhou’s Xuanmiao Temple, served not only as a place for religious and sacrificial activities but also as an entertainment venue for the public. As a site for worship, it even hosted imperial ceremonies for the Huzhou City God.
Historically, Fumiao’s religious activities were overseen by Taoism (Fumiao is a Taoist temple led by orthodox sects), and throughout the seasons, it continuously hosted performances by itinerant artists (including theater, acrobatics, magic, and more). Fumiao is also the birthplace of the storytelling art form Huzhou Dabook and the folk musical style Hutan. Before the war, it once operated as a domestic goods market, along with a variety of food stalls, general merchandise, fortune-telling, and character divination stands, presenting a vibrant scene of endless diversity.
In 1994, Fumiao underwent renovation and opened to the public on January 1, 1996.
After the renovation, a new memorial archway was constructed in front of Fumiao. Between its four pillars, ten drum-shaped stones are placed beside the stone columns, and the archway features a pavilion-style design. Fumiao has three main gates, each with a drum-shaped stone on the western side, and a pair of stone lions are positioned at the front entrance.
A new terrace was built in front of the main hall, surrounded by stone railings. At the center of the terrace sits a precious ding (tripod cauldron), adding grandeur to the hall. In front of the terrace, a new hexagonal double-eaved stone pavilion was added, named the “Yanhe Pavilion.”
On the eastern and western sides behind the main hall, two new four-corner double-eaved pavilions were constructed. The western four-corner pavilion houses a stone stele inscribed with the “Record of the Renovation of Huzhou Prefectural Temple” from the Year of Yihai (1995), while the eastern four-corner pavilion displays a stone stele from the 53rd year of the Qianlong reign (1788) titled “Record of the Renovation of the City God Temple.”
