A mining adventure in the city: The Hexing Pit rivals the Jinguashi mines, now accessible within Taipei

What? There’s an old mine in Taipei that rivals the Jinguashi mines? Located near the Cihui Temple in Beitou, theHexing Coal Minehas been restored by the Taipei City Government and unveiled as a new city attraction. Now you can experience a mining adventure without traveling all the way to the Jinguashi mining area.

The Hexing Coal Mine site is located beside the old Pichi Creek in Taipei. In the past, coal mining left behind piles of coal slag, resulting in fragile geological conditions. The Civil Engineering Bureau of the Taipei City Government carried out comprehensive environmental development, creating a new leisure and recreational destination for the public. Upon entering the park, visitors can follow the brick-red pathways and the former mining railway tracks into a “time tunnel,” where they can admire lifelike representations of mine carts emerging from the pit and ceramic murals depicting “The Life of Coal” — from formation to end products. At the end, there is a “spiral staircase,” where lucky visitors might even spot many bats hanging upside down to rest at the old mine’s slag discharge outlet. The restoration of the Hexing Coal Mine has created a new Taipei attraction that is both educational and rich in historical and cultural atmosphere.

Hexing Coal Mine
1. Riding a U-BIKE:
Rent a U-BIKE from Taipei 101 Station or Xiangshan Station, then cycle along Songren Road to Wuxing Street. Turn left and ride along Lane 401, Section 5, Xinyi Road, No. 150, then take the alley to the Technical Training Center of the Joint Logistics School before turning right onto Lane 471, Section 5, Xinyi Road, No. 150.
2. Driving yourself:
Drive along Songren Road to Wuxing Street, turn left, then go along Lane 401, Section 5, Xinyi Road, No. 150, to the Technical Training Center of the Joint Logistics School before turning right onto Lane 471, Section 5, Xinyi Road, No. 150.
