Huzhou Chaoyin Bridge

Huzhou Chaoyin Bridge is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Located on the east side of South Street in Huzhou City, Chaoyin Bridge, commonly known as the "bridge within a bridge," is one of the “Three Wonders of Huzhou.”

Built in the 18th year of the Jiajing reign during the Ming Dynasty (1539), it is a three-arch stone bridge. Before 1539, the site was a ferry crossing called Chaoyin Ferry.

The name “Chaoyin” is derived from the Chaoyin Cave on Mount Putuo in Zhoushan. According to the Wu Cheng County Annals of the Chongzhen reign of the Ming Dynasty, Chaoyin Ferry “was named after the enshrinement of the Goddess of Mercy (Guanyin).” The Wu Cheng County Annals of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty recorded: “Chaoyin Ferry was named for the enshrinement of the Goddess of Mercy at Cigan Temple, also referred to as Cigan Ferry.” When the bridge was built at the ferry site in the 18th year of the Jiajing reign, it inherited the name Chaoyin Ferry, hence becoming Chaoyin Bridge.

On October 7, 2019, Huzhou Chaoyin Bridge was included in the eighth batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.
