The Hall of the Niu Family’s Number One Scholar (including Benren Hall and Yong’an Bridge) is located on Naoqin Street in Huzhou City. The Hall faces Benren Hall across the Tiaoxi River, with Yong’an Bridge serving as the link between them. Originally the ancestral hall of the western branch of the Niu family, after Niu Fubao became the top scholar, he partially renovated it as the “Hall of the Number One Scholar” to display various relics of Niu family members who had achieved academic honors. It consists of an entrance hall, ceremonial gate, screen wall, main hall, east and west wing rooms, and a garden.

Benren Hall is an old residence of the Niu family, initially built during the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty, covering an area of approximately 2,720 square meters, and composed of four axial lines. Yong’an Bridge was first built in the Ming Dynasty as a wooden bridge and was reconstructed as a stone bridge in the eighth year of the Daoguang reign (1828).

The Hall of the Niu Family’s Number One Scholar is the only remaining hall building in the Huzhou area related to imperial examination culture. It houses multiple physical artifacts related to the imperial examinations and holds significant value for the study of that culture. The architecture itself also represents a fine example of traditional buildings in the Jiangnan water town style.
