Xiangwang Park

Xiangwang Park is located on the southern bank of the river section between Feifeng Bridge and the North City Sluice, near the ruins of Huzhou’s Fengsheng Gate. Fengsheng Gate is also known as the “Overlord Gate.” Legend has it that when Xiang Yu led eight thousand soldiers from the Jiangdong region westward to attack the tyrannical Qin Dynasty, he exited through this gate, breaking through the “Gate of Doom.” According to expert research, many of Xiang Yu’s activities before and after raising his army took place in Huzhou. During the period when he was hiding from enemies, coincidentally, Emperor Qin Shi Huang made an eastern tour that passed through Huzhou. It was near Yanpu, 8 kilometers northeast of Huzhou city, where Xiang Yu secretly watched the emperor’s procession and proclaimed, “He can be overthrown and replaced by someone like me.”

Xiangwang Park includes structures such as the city gate and the Xiangwang Corridor. To the northwest of the original Fengsheng Gate site are the city gate and gate tower (Xiangwang Tower), while to the northwest of the gate is the Xiangwang Corridor, and to the south lies a square, all surrounded and set off by green spaces. The park features three sets of sculptures: the main sculpture of Xiang Yu is placed right in the center on the north side of the gate; two sets of horse-drawn chariot sculptures are positioned on the east and west sides of the square; and there is also a waterside platform along the river.

Above the city gate, a traditional wooden-structured Xiangwang Tower has been built, which houses exhibits displaying the life and deeds of Xiang Yu. The Xiangwang Corridor, located to the northwest of the city gate, adopts the traditional style of corridor pavilions, allowing one side to overlook the water and the other to enjoy the garden. On the scenic walls, ceramic bas-reliefs depict episodes from Xiang Yu’s life and some legends about him in Huzhou. The entire Xiangwang Park exudes a strong historical atmosphere.
