The Zhangjiagang Huancheng River Water Conservancy Scenic Area is a national AAA-level tourist attraction and a national water conservancy scenic area.

The Huancheng River Water Conservancy Scenic Area is located in the southwestern part of Zhangjiagang City and consists of “one river and one lake” (the Huancheng River and Jiyang Lake), covering a total area of approximately 6.25 square kilometers, of which the water area is about 1.79 square kilometers. The scenic area primarily relies on the Chaodongweigang Water Control Hub, the Huancheng River, and Jiyang Lake, with water ecological culture at its core and waterfront landscapes as its link. It integrates ecology, culture, engineering, and scenery into a nearly 20-kilometer urban ecological corridor.

“Poetic and picturesque clear waters, vibrant Huancheng River.” The Huancheng River starts from the Chaodongweigang outfall to the Yangtze River in the north and connects to the West District River in the south. In 2008, the river channel improvement project commenced, and in 2009, demolition along the Chaodongweigang section and supporting hydraulic facilities along the river were launched successively. It is currently the largest clean water diversion corridor project in Zhangjiagang City. The renovated Huancheng River is long and winding, with crystal-clear water, resembling a auspicious dragon soaring from the Yangtze River estuary, encircling the western part of the city. From a distance, it looks lively and graceful; up close, it gleams like golden walls.

Jiyang Lake was originally a vast marshy wetland with a thousand years of historical heritage. In 2000, to improve the water ecological environment and enhance the city’s image, it was re-excavated and rehabilitated during the centralized earth extraction for the construction of the Yangtze River Expressway. Today, the entire lake surface looks naturally expansive, with clear waters and shimmering ripples, as delicate and dynamic as a fairy.

Various natural and cultural landscapes within the lake area complement and enhance each other. The Luozhou Island in the center of Jiyang Lake covers an area of 60 acres, teeming with birds and lush vegetation. It features four steel towers, the tallest of which stands 32 meters high and is named “Egret Calling Tower.”
