Huangqi Bridge

Huangqi Bridge is located in Licun Village (formerly Huangqi Village), Tangshi area, Yangshe Town, Zhangjiagang City. It runs from north to south and spans the Gudugang River. During the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty, after the “Clubbing Case” occurred, Liu Tingyuan, the metropolitan censor assigned to the case, covered up ——, hastily concluded the investigation, and prevented others from further probing into the matter. Mi Changqi (from Qigan Village, Tangshi), seeing that they were distorting the facts to exonerate the chief culprit, publicly exposed the truth ——. This act immediately drew false accusations and slanders from Liu Tingyuan and his associates. Mi Changqi then feigned illness and returned to his hometown by boat. One day, as the official boat passed by Huangqi Bridge on the Gudugang River, Mi Changqi ordered his subordinates to lower the yellow flag while crossing the bridge, so as not to disturb the local people, as a gesture of respect for his hometown. Later, Mi Changqi’s subordinates spread the story of how he quietly lowered the yellow flag and returned home so as not to alarm the people. Nearby residents then renamed the bridge Huangqi Bridge in his memory. Huangqi Bridge was once a major thoroughfare for travelers coming from the south and north. Due to road expansion and other reasons, it has now largely fallen into disuse, but the entire structure remains well-preserved, just as solid and majestic as it was in those days.
