Second-Ranked Scholar’s Mansion

The Second-Ranked Scholar’s Mansion is located on Tiantang Old Street in Gangkou Town, Zhangjiagang City, Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. It was built in the early years of the Qianlong reign during the Qing Dynasty as the residence of the Yang family. The existing structure consists of four sections with four courtyards: the first section has three rooms, the second and third each have four rooms and are all single-story buildings, while the fourth section comprises four rooms in a two-story building. The entire residence is 49.3 meters deep, 11.3 meters wide at the front, and 16.2 meters wide at the back. The third section is the main hall, spanning 16 meters in width, 11.2 meters in depth, and 7 meters in height. Its column bases are made of blue stone drum pedestals, featuring a raised-beam structure, double-eaved square eaves, and gold-plated, polychrome paintings on the main beams. The rear building has four rooms, with the lower floor being taller and the upper floor shorter. It spans 16.2 meters in width, 7.2 meters in depth, and 7.9 meters in height. This former residence is built in the style of Ming architecture.

In 2006, the Second-Ranked Scholar’s Mansion was listed by the provincial government as part of the sixth batch of Jiangsu Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Units.
