Former Residence of Sun Yefang

The Former Residence of Sun Yefang is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangsu Province.

The Sun Yefang Memorial Hall is located at No. 121, Lisi Street, Yiqu, Huishan District, Wuxi City. To commemorate and study Sun Yefang, in July 1997, the Yiqu Town Party Committee and Town Government established the Sun Yefang Memorial Hall within Wenchang Park. The name of the hall was inscribed by Yang Shangkun.

In 2008, on the 100th anniversary of Sun Yefang’s birth, the Yiqu Town Party Committee and Town Government renovated the former residence of Sun Yefang in Lisi (though his adoptive daughter, Li Zhao, did not agree with this designation) and relocated the Sun Yefang Memorial Hall into the residence. The residence is a late Qing Dynasty building, consisting of five courtyards, facing south with its back to the north, built along the street, and constructed with brick and wood.

Sun Yefang (1908–1983), originally named Xue Eguo, was from Lisi Village, Yiqu, Wuxi. He was a renowned Marxist economist. At the age of 15, he engaged in student and labor movements. In 1923, he joined the Chinese Socialist Youth League, and in January 1925, he became a member of the Communist Party of China, serving as the first secretary of the Wuxi Branch of the CPC. In the same year, he went to the Sun Yat-sen University in Moscow, Soviet Union, to study. He returned to China in 1930 and engaged in revolutionary activities in Shanghai. In 1940, he went to work in Yan'an. After the founding of New China, he served as the Deputy Director of the National Bureau of Statistics, Director of the Institute of Economics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Advisor to the State Council Economic Research Center, and member of the Central Advisory Commission of the CPC, among other positions.

During the Cultural Revolution, he never gave up his research on Marxist economic theory. The insightful views he proposed in the book "On Socialist Economy" (written in draft form) represented a valuable exploration for the practice of socialism with Chinese characteristics and made important contributions to socialist modernization.

On June 5, 2006, the Former Residence of Sun Yefang was announced as part of the sixth batch of Jiangsu Provincial Cultural Relic Protection Units.
