Wuxi Jiuli River Wetland Park

Jiuli River Wetland Park is located in Xidong New Town, Wuxi, in the southwest of the high-speed rail business district. The project covers an area of approximately 39 hectares, including 8.1 hectares of water surface. The Jiuli River area was once home to villages and low-lying polder regions, dotted with numerous hidden ponds and muddy areas. In addition, some migrant vegetable farmers in the vicinity raised large numbers of livestock and poultry, whose manure and feed, after fermentation, had a severely negative impact on the surrounding environment—so bad that people would avoid walking nearby. To improve the landscape of Xidong, planning efforts were made to transform the area into a public green space that combines recreational leisure with ecological themes, forming an urban ecological park that integrates greenery, ecology, and leisure, reflecting the gateway image of the new town.

The first phase of Jiuli River Wetland Park was completed and opened to the public on New Year’s Day 2012. It is a sub-project of the Taihu Lake Water Pollution Ecological Restoration Project and has become a leisure destination for local residents. On holidays or in the evenings, the park is often filled with visitors enjoying the scenery and taking photos.

The overall floral design style of Jiuli River Wetland emphasizes a natural and wild aesthetic, with the park’s squares, water surfaces, and green spaces each offering their own unique charm. The gateway feature planting area is situated within a 7.9-hectare zone south of Xihui Road and north of Jiuli River. At the entrance, the park square features a landmark landscape wall, which, together with a dripping water pool, creates a rich visual focal point. This area serves as a transition zone between the urban interface and the ecological park, using orderly tree alignments and varied sequences of distinctive shrub belts to create a rhythmic and harmonious visual flow.

Romantic flower slopes along the water complement the classic Jiangnan scenery of clear ripples and willow-lined banks, showcasing the elegance and gentle beauty of the Jiangnan water town reflected in the water. The lakeside wooden boardwalks bring visitors closer to the water, offering sweeping views of the entire ecological park’s beauty.

East of Fangshan Road and south of Jiuli River lies a 3.4-hectare ecological wetland island. With varying water depths, a rich variety of aquatic plants has been used to enhance visual appeal and create diverse shoreline features. Gulls and egrets play among the vegetation, forming a naturally wild landscape. The area includes a dense forest-themed ecological woodland zone and a sunny activity zone designed to provide visitors with a variety of open recreational spaces. The park also features colorful flower fields that add a unique natural ambiance, offering visitors a distinctive visual experience.

Inside Jiuli River Wetland Park, there is also a planning exhibition hall that displays a comprehensive model of the 45-square-kilometer business district near Jiuli River, as well as models of the three-dimensional transportation system, the overall traffic network of the high-speed rail business district, and various specialized planning projects. As the park continues to expand, the beauty of the Jiuli River scenic belt will become increasingly prominent, making it the true “western living room” of Wuxi’s high-speed rail business district.
