China Township Enterprises Museum

The China Township Enterprises Museum is located on Dongting Road in Xishan District, Wuxi. It opened on July 28, 2010, and is the country's only thematic museum that collects historical documents and cultural relics from various periods of the development of township enterprises. The museum is situated on the former site of the Chunlei Shipyard in Dongting, Xishan District, Wuxi. This shipyard was one of China’s earliest township enterprises (located near the Leather City). The project covers a total area of 45,000 square meters, with a building area of 10,100 square meters and a total investment of 164 million yuan. It mainly consists of indoor exhibition areas of the museum and the site of the former Chunlei Shipyard. The main exhibition hall is divided into five sections: the Preface Hall, the Achievements Hall, the Journey Hall, the Regional Hall, and the Wuxi Hall. The entire museum follows the concept of “respecting history, focusing on the present, showcasing brilliance, and heralding the future,” using a large number of physical objects, photos, and textual records to comprehensively display the development history, successful experiences, and remarkable achievements of China’s township enterprises.

The construction and completion of the China Township Enterprises Museum is a milestone event in the history of the development of township enterprises in China. Its exhibits play an important practical role in promoting the indomitable entrepreneurial spirit of hundreds of millions of farmers, addressing the issues related to agriculture, rural areas, and farmers, advancing coordinated urban-rural development, and building a moderately prosperous society in all respects.

Township enterprises in China emerged in the late 1950s and early 1960s, entered a period of rapid growth in the 1980s and early 1990s, then transitioned into a phase of adjustment and improvement, and have now entered a new stage of transformational development. In the 7,000-year history of Chinese farming culture, township enterprises created a period of “unexpected” brilliance. In an era where dreams intertwined with reality, the sudden rise and rapid development of township enterprises pioneered a uniquely Chinese path of rural industrialization. This not only dramatically transformed the rural areas and farmers under the original system, changed the old face of the urban-rural dual structure, reshaped China’s and the world’s economic landscape, enhanced China’s overall strength and vitality for development, but also left behind precious cultural heritage and spiritual wealth belonging to the nation.
