Wanshan Stone Pagoda

Wanshan Stone Pagoda is a protected cultural heritage site of Jiangsu Province.

Wanshan Stone Pagoda, also known as Baoging Pagoda or Baoqing Pagoda, is located on Wanshan Hill in Yangjian Town, Xishan District, Wuxi City, and is a protected cultural heritage site of Jiangsu Province.

Constructed in 1574 during the Ming Dynasty’s Jiajing era by a local man named Gu Dadong, the pagoda has a solid inner core and mimics the style of a multi-story pavilion. It features six sides and six levels, with each side of the ground floor measuring 2.5 meters wide, tapering slightly as it goes up, and a total height of 12 meters. The inner core is built from iron-brown stone blocks, bonded with a mixture of lime, glutinous rice paste, and sand, which was poured into the joints. The exterior is clad with bluestone slabs. Due to age, apart from the southern bluestone facing which remains largely intact, other parts have begun to peel and erode.

In 1983, it was designated as a cultural heritage site of Wuxi County by the former Wuxi County People's Government. In August 2000, the local government began raising 400,000 yuan for the restoration of the pagoda, and the project was completed on April 3, 2001. On December 30, 2011, the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government recognized it as a protected cultural heritage site of Jiangsu Province.
