Pengcheng Square

Pengcheng Square is situated in the city center. Construction began on June 4, 1998, and it was completed and opened to the public by the end of September the same year, taking 116 days in total. It was the most important municipal project of Xuzhou in 1998, and its completion realized the local people's dream of having a major city-center square. The square is large in scale and has an imposing atmosphere. The central area houses facilities such as a dovecote and tool rooms. The lawn is divided into irregular shapes, leaving large open spaces that are convenient for morning exercises, rest, and other activities.

Pengcheng Square consists of three parts: the main square, the auxiliary square, and the south square. The main square is divided into green spaces in the shape of a "ding" (an ancient Chinese cauldron), organizing visitor flow. The four feet of the "ding" are pathways extending in all directions, while the body of the "ding" is paved with Anxi red and Taihang red granite to form the largest chessboard in China, symbolizing Xuzhou’s historical status as a strategic military location. The green areas feature large expanses of evergreen American-imported turf as the base, preserving original large trees and ornamental pomegranate trees, creating an effect of “flowers under the trees and trees beneath the flowers.” The center of the square is marked with a Zero Kilometer Monument and a flagpole for the national flag.

The auxiliary square was transformed from the original plaza. The south square, which faces Huaihai Road, is a mainly scenic turf square covering an area of 12,320 square meters. Its center features a circular fountain along with lighting and sound systems. The “Fire Trees and Silver Flowers” decorative lights stand 19.98 meters tall, using modern high-tech methods to simulate colorful and vibrant fireworks displays. The square stretches approximately 250 meters from east to west—from Zhongshan North Road in the west to Pengcheng Road in the east—and over 400 meters from north to south, spanning Huaihai Road. The management area covers nearly 100,000 square meters, with green space totaling almost 4.2 hectares and a green coverage rate of 67%, making it the largest urban central square in the province.
